A juvenile in hot water for alleged attempted rape

SMITHFIELD - A 17-year-old male is in hot water after he allegedly attempted to rape a 58-year-old female at a local farm in the Smithfield District.

On 6 February 2022, the victim was asleep at her home when she woke up when a teenage boy attempted to rape her. She managed to push the suspect away. The young boy ran away. The suspect confessed to his mother that he was the one who tried to rape the victim.

A case of attempted rape was opened for investigation on Wednesday, 09 February 2022, and the suspect was apprehended on the same day. He was released into his parents’ custody. Xhariep District Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit will continue with their investigation.

The suspect will appear before Smithfield Magistrates’ Court soon. 

An appeal is made to the community to report any gender based violence immediately to the police so that crucial evidence can be collected on time where possible.
