Media Statement from Eastern Cape Media Centre KING WILIAM’S TOWN – Centane Police’s swift action led to the arrest of four suspects, between the ages of 25 and 26. The arrests were effected on Tuesday 20 January 2015 at about 17:30 just outside Centane Town. It is alleged that five suspects hijacked a bakkie belonging to a Pakistani shop owner. The shop owner (44 years old) and his wife were pointed with a fire arm and their vehicle was taken at Ngede Village Centane where they operate a shop. The suspects tied the couple up, forced them onto the back of the bakkie, and drove to Qolora Junction between Centane and Butterworth. The victims were left in the vehicle at Qolora Junction after they were robbed of their cell phones. The suspects drove back to Centane town using a white sedan car brought by suspects. Centane Police were on patrol when they heard screams from the bakkie and went to investigate. They found the couple tied up and rescued them. The couple were able to provide a description of the vehicle and the suspects to the police. It was not much later when alert police officer on patrol spotted the vehicle at the entrance to Centane Town and pulled it over. The four suspects were arrested whilst a fifth one managed to escape from the scene. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and eight rounds of ammunition. The fire-arms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of other crimes. The suspects were charged with armed robbery, hijacking, possession of unlicensed fire arms and ammunition. They will appear in the Centane magistrate court soon. Butterworth Cluster Commander Brigadier Mbheko Sibidla praised Centane Police for their quick reaction and swift arrest of the suspects. -End- Media Enquiries: Captain Jackson Manatha Mobile: 082 411 4993
