DURBAN – Information was received about a group of men who are suspected to be involved in carjacking and other serious cases in the Pietermaritzburg policing area. A joint operation was put in place yesterday morning to track the suspects.

The team swooped in on two homesteads in Appelsbosch which is under the Harburg policing area. Upon searching both homesteads, two suspects were found in possession of firearms. A 26-year-old suspect was found in possession of a pistol with two rounds of ammunition and a 29 year-old man was found in possession of a pistol with 25 rounds of ammunition.

Both men were placed under arrest for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The suspects will be profiled to confirm that they are linked to carjacking and other serious cases reported in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any offence. The suspects are expected to appear before the New Hanover Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
