Man handed hefty sentence for illegal possession of a live pangolin

NELSPRUIT - The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has welcomed a hefty sentence handed down to a 42-year-old Tichoana Chifamba.

The Zimbabwean national was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for illegal possession of a live pangolin by the Secunda Regional Court, yesterday, 24 March 2022.

The court heard how on 03 August 2021, police in Trichardt received information that there was a person selling a live pangolin and he was looking for a buyer. They (police) then followed up on the information, found the suspect in possession of the pangolin and swiftly arrested him as well as charged him, hence his sentencing.

The Provincial Commissioner also applauded the team of detectives for their hard work and thorough investigation that led to this notable conviction.
