More inquest cases opened after bodies discovered in Limpopo rivers

POLOKWANE - Limpopo police are investigating two more separate inquest cases following the discovery of bodies in rivers within the Malamulele and Makhado policing areas.

In Malamulele, police opened an inquest case following the discovery of a body in a river at Nghomunghomu Village, on Friday, 23 January 2026, around 10:30. Police were alerted after receiving information about a body found in the river.

Upon arrival at the scene, Police were met by a community member who pointed out the body trapped among bushes inside the river.

The deceased is alleged to be a 48-year-old male who went missing on Sunday, 18 January 2026.

The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

In a separate incident, police in Makhado also opened an inquest case following the discovery of the body of an unknown male, estimated to be about 58 years old, on Thursday, 22 January 2026 at around 08:00.

According to reports, police received information from the Community Service Centre and responded to the scene, where the body of the deceased was found floating in a river near a local restaurant. The deceased was partially unclothed, wearing a brown striped T-shirt, blue and white underwear, black socks, and no shoes.

Emergency Medical Services certified both deceased persons dead at the scenes.

The circumstances surrounding both incidents are unclear at this stage, and further police investigations will determine the cause of death.

Police investigations into both incidents are continuing.
