Three accused sentenced for theft and possession of stolen cellphone tower batteries

FREE STATE - In June 2021, Springfontein police were summoned to an incident close to the N1 where the two cellphone towers signalled a break-in. Police working together with private security companies, responded and successfully arrested three males and recovered 24 batteries to the total value of R135 000 and a white Toyota bakkie used in the commission of the crime.

The three suspects aged 28, 32 and 34 years, were arrested and detained in Springfontein.  The case was handed over to the Provincial Organized Crime Investigation Unit.

On 10 May 2022, the three suspects, Clive Hove (28), Washington Khoza (32) and Patrick Chiranbandarn (34) were found guilty and sentenced as follows:

Count 1: Tampering/ Damage of Essential infrastructure and theft of 12 cellphone tower batteries (MTN) - 15 years imprisonment.

Count 2: Tampering/Damage of Essential Infrastructure and theft of 12 batteries (Vodacom) - 15 years imprisonment

Each suspect was sentenced to 30 years as the two charges do not run concurrently.

Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane lauded the contribution made by both cellphone companies during the investigation and continued by commending the investigating team for the sterling work. This must send a strong message to those who continue to damage essential infrastructure.
