Today, 19 December 2014, members of the Mbongolwane Police Station, Tactical Response Team, Airwing Unit, Public Order Police and South African Defence Force embarked on a suspect raid operation at Mbongolwane area near Eshowe. Four suspects aged between 20 and 24 were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and murder. Members seized three hand guns, one homemade shotgun, one air gun and eighteen rounds of live ammunition. Two of the suspects were also found in possession of police and SANDF uniform.

The arrested suspects will be linked to two murder cases that happened in Mbongolwane area earlier this year. It is alleged that on 21 April 2014 Nkosinathi Gazu (50) and Ntombifuthi Gumede (35) were found dead with gunshot wounds in their bodies. All suspects will appear at Eshowe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 22 December 2014. The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic analysis to ascertain if they were used in any commission of crime in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for the good work that led to the arrest of the suspects. “During this festive season our police will join forces with other law enforcement agencies in a fight against crime and will strengthen these joint operations,” she said.
