Provincial Commissioner welcomes yet another hefty sentence handed down to a rapist

POLOKWANE - The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has once more welcomed the life sentence that was handed down by the Regional Court in Tzaneen today on Tuesday, 28 June 2022, against a 28-year-old accused, Dineo Prince Sekgobela. This, after he was convicted of raping three children at Rikhotso village outside Tzaneen.

The trial court found that the accused had on 12 November 2016 broken into a house and found a 17-year-old girl sleeping together with her siblings. He then threatened them with a knife and raped her in front of them.

Seven days later, on 19 November 2016 the accused broke into another house at the same village and found a 17-year-old girl sleeping. He also threatened her with a knife and raped her.

Two days later on 21 November 2016, the accused went to another homestead at the same village and knocked at the door, pretending to be asking for water. He then forcefully entered the house and raped the 14-year-old victim.

The cases were assigned to Detective Sergeant Glenda Mathebula attached to Tzaneen Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). After meticulous investigations, the accused was arrested and charged with 3 counts of Rape and 1 count of house breaking with intent to commit rape.

The sentences were handed down as follows:

1. 10 years imprisonment for rape

2. 06 years imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to commit rape 

3. 10 years imprisonment for the second rape

4. Life sentence for the last rape.

Sentences number 1, 2 and 3 will run concurrently with sentence number 4.

“As we continue with the fight against Gender Based Violence and Femicide, sentences like these are most welcomed as they strengthen our resolve in this fight to be more determined,” concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
