On Friday night, 10 April at 21:00, a 28-year-old man and his girlfriend parked their Toyota RunX at the Bhambayi Driving School training grounds in Inanda  and went for a stroll. It is alleged that three armed men approached them and demanded the car keys. The man was shot in the back when he refused to hand over his keys. A further three armed suspects arrived and the car keys were removed from the victim’s pocket. The suspects took the couple’s cellphones before fleeing in their Toyota RunX.

Charges of carjacking and attempted murder were registered by the Inanda SAPS for investigation. On Wednesday, 15 April, members of the KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence and Crime Prevention Unit carried out an intelligence driven operation in the Umhlali area and arrested five suspects. The Toyota RunX and two cellphones were recovered by police. The arrested suspects are in police custody and will appear in the Ntuzumal Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 17 April 2015.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni is pleased with the arrests of the five suspects and the recovery of the allegedly stolen property. She has called on the investigating officer to leave no stone unturned in collecting and presenting evidence at court to secure the successful convictions of the arrested men. “Criminals must be removed from our streets and locked away in correctional facilities until they have been rehabilitated and are ready to be reintegrated into society. Innocent members of the public should not have to live in constant fear of being attacked by criminals. We appeal to the courts to hand out sentences to convicted criminals that would make others think twice before they decide to break the law.”, said General Ngobeni.  -End-
