POTCHEFSTROOM - The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng lauds a multidisciplinary Task Team for working tirelessly to unearth a motor vehicle theft syndicate that has been operating mainly in Tlhabane and the surrounding areas. The syndicate, among others, stole a police officer's private car in Tlhabane on Sunday, 15 December 2024. Subsequent to an investigation by the team comprising Provincial Investigation Unit, Rustenburg Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, (VCIU) Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Public Order Policing (POP), two of the syndicate members were arrested on Thursday, 30 January 2025, in Tlhabane West. Further probing into the matter revealed that the group operates in the provinces of North West and Mpumalanga and sells stolen cars to clients in Mozambique and South Africa for prices ranging from R20 000,00 to R35 000,00. The team also discovered that the syndicate consists of a former employee of a tracking company, a signal jammer operator, remote controlled gates specialist and a police officer. Investigations and efforts to arrest more suspects and recover stolen vehicles are underway. The suspects are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 03 February 2025. Major General Asaneng thanked the team members for the enthusiasm they displayed to ascertain that those who unlawfully dispossess the citizens of their property are dealt with effectively. Ends
