Media Statement GAUTENG – The Hawks’ Provincial Head in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa welcomed a hefty sentence handed down to a drug smuggler by the Kempton Park Regional Court on Tuesday, 15 February. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston received intelligence about a suspected drug mule and an enquiry was registered for investigation. Andries Potgieter (51) was flagged and circulated on the boarder movement control system. In February 2020, the Hawks were alerted of Potgieter’s departure to Hong Kong with Cathy Pacific airline at the OR Tambo International Airport. The investigation team rushed to the boarding gates where Potgieter was being processed for departure. He was searched and on his upper body, police found 5.28 kilograms of suspected heroine wrapped with a heavy duty foil and arrested him immediately. Potgieter was charged with illegal dealing in drugs and drug trafficking Act. On Tuesday, 15 February 2022, the court found Potgieter guilty on count of illegal dealing in drugs and drugs smuggling. He was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment with no option of a fine. Major General Kadwa urged everyone who may be approached to be a drug courier or aware of such illegal activities, to please report them to authorities for further investigation. “Sentences of this magnitude give the community hope knowing that perpetrators are brought to book”.
