Media Statement NORTHERN CAPE - The Police will leave no stone unturned in fighting the scourge of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and requests that victims break the silence, so that more of these domestic violence related court sentences can be celebrated. On 05 November 2021 at 18:05 in Tsaelengwe Village,Mothibistad, the female victim (17) was on her way to her boyfriend when she was accosted and kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend (26). He assaulted her and forcefully locked her up at his house. The following day at 10:00 he continued to assault her and raped her. The victim opened a case at the police station and the ex-boyfriend was arrested hours later. Police opposed bail and the accused was sentenced on 12 June 2023 in Mothibistad Regional Court. He received 10 years imprisonment for rape, 3 years for kidnapping and the sentences will run concurrently. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele commended the Investigating Official D/Sgt Keitshwaretswe Precious Schoeman for her meticulous investigation and applauded the commander of the Kuruman FCS unit, Capt Caren Nelson her assistance and focus on rooting out GBVF from our communities.
