WESTERN CAPE - The George Regional Court on 26 February 2024 sentenced Michael John Wise (57) for dealing in drugs and money laundering.

On Monday, 26 February 2024 the accused entered into a plea and sentence agreement in terms of Section 105A of Act 51 of 1977.

On count one: Dealing in drugs, the accused contravened the provisions of Section 5 (b) read with Sections 1, 3, 17, 25 and 64 of the Drugs & Drug Trafficking Act, Act 140 of 1992.

On five counts of money laundering, the accused contravened Section 4(a) read with Section 1,7A and 8 of Act 121 of 1998 of POCA, to a total of R142 000.00.

All charges were taken together for the purpose of sentencing and the accused was sentenced to a fine of R100 000 or 4 years imprisonment. In addition, he was sentenced to six(6) years imprisonment which is suspended for a period of five(5)years.

Furthermore, in terms of Section 18 (2) of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, 121 of 1998, the accused is ordered to pay the amount of R100 000 into the CARA bank account on 27 February 2024 as per the plea and sentence agreement.

The court further ordered that the accused be declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 (2) of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000.

This sentence stems from 2016 when the Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SANEB) team received information that a suspect was visiting one of his clients in Cape Town. The Hawks in collaboration with Riversdale SAPS operationalized the information by conducting routine stop and search on the N2.

A white Toyota Hilux bakkie was stopped on the N2 in Riversdale and upon searching, police discovered a black painted wooden box that contained 5 015 kg of cannabis.

The Hawks Provincial Head in the Western Cape Major General Mathipa Makgato commended the team for their continued efforts to rid the streets of drugs and perpetrators eventually get what they deserve.
