Provincial Commissioner welcomes hefty sentences handed down against the killers of Councillor Maupa

POLOKWANE - The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the life sentences that were handed down by the Limpopo Division of the High Court in Polokwane yesterday, 15 September 2022 against the two accused who were convicted for the murder of Councillor Thabang Maupa of Tubatse-Fetakgomo Local Municipality in 2018.

The Councillor, who was 42 at the time, was shot dead at point blank by the two accused while sitting in his motor vehicle that he had parked in front of his business at Riba Cross outside Burgersfort on 26 November 2018 at about 19:30.

The case was investigated by the Provincial Investigation Unit under commandship of Captain Carthbert Mogale who was tasked to investigate the incident together with the members of Crime Intelligence and Provincial Tracking Team.

The two accused, Kagiso Maroga (34) and Dan Tjie (35) were both given life sentences for killing the Councillor, 10 years for attempting to kill his wife, 10 years for possession of unlicensed firearm and four years for possession of unlicensed ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.

"I commend the team for succeeding in cracking this case and making sure that this heartless criminals spend their lives in incarceration, concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
