KWAMSANE – Umkhanyakude District Police Task Team officers have arrested five suspects for possession of firearms and ammunition without licence, possession of property suspected to be stolen and possession of game meat at Mnqobokazi area in Hluhluwe on 30 July 2025.

Police conducted an intelligence-driven operation which resulted in the arrest of the five suspects aged between 29 and 46 who were terrorising the community of Umkhanyakude District by stealing, illegal hunting, killing and poaching of animals in the game reserves.  

During the operation, police raided different homes and arrested four men and one woman who was found in possession a shotgun and ammunition without a license. Police also recovered three more firearms, including a homemade gun, as well as several rounds of ammunition of different calibre of firearms. In one house police found a freezer full of game meat, welding machine and a grinder.

The suspects will appear before Mtubatuba Magistrate's Court on 31 July 2025.

The District Commissioner Brigadier Jeros Thango has complimented the police for their commitment in fighting crime in the district of Umkhanyakude.
