Media Statement FICKSBURG - The Ficksburg police arrested a 36-year-old man from Qwaqwa after he was allegedly found driving under the influence of alcohol and in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The firearm was reportedly stolen from a police station in Soweto, Gauteng Province, in November 2025. It is alleged that members of the Ficksburg police were conducting stop-and-search operations in Meqheleng near Ficksburg shortly after midnight as part of ongoing crime prevention and visibility patrols in the area. Police reportedly noticed a suspicious Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with Gauteng registration plates being driven recklessly and stopped the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, officers allegedly discovered that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and was also in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect failed to produce valid documentation for the firearm and was immediately arrested and detained. Further investigation and circulation of the firearm revealed that it had been reported stolen at a police station in Soweto, Gauteng Province, during November 2025. The suspect is expected to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 4 May 2026, facing charges relating to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a suspected stolen firearm, and driving under the influence of alcohol. The South African Police Service applauded the officers involved for their dedication, commitment to service excellence, and efforts in removing illegal firearms from communities. Ends
