Media Statement DURBAN: The Mtubatuba Magistrates’ Court has sentenced four suspects after they were convicted on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft, attempted murder, murder as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Zakhele Vusi Gumbi (32) was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment, Sibusiso Velenkosini Mkhwanazi (32) to 20 years imprisonment, Philani Carlos Mzimela (32) to 26 years imprisonment and Siyabonga Michael Sangweni (20) to 23 years imprisonment. On 2 February 2022, the four suspects entered a business premises in Mtubatuba and demanded cash. They stole cash and electronic devices before they attempted to flee the scene. They were cornered by the police and a shootout ensued resulting in two suspects sustaining gunshot wounds on their legs. The matter was investigated by Mtubatuba police and a preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were wanted for various crimes. Despite the suspects claiming that they were innocent, police were able to disprove their version of what happened on that day. The suspects made several court appearances before they were convicted and sentenced. Ends
