This morning, 18 September 2016 at about 05:55 a police officer was walking along Old Main Road on his way to work when he noticed a burglary in progress at a motor vehicle dealership. There were at least five suspects inside busy stealing property. He further saw a suspicious-looking white Mercedes with its doors open near the premises. The member approached the suspects, and when the suspects saw the police officer, they allegedly opened fire towards the member and the member returned fire. The Police officer was shot and injured in his left hand index finger and was rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The Suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle with stolen computers. A case of attempted murder and business burglary was opened at Pinetown police station for further investigation.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended a brave police officer, stationed at Pinetown police station, who confronted five armed suspects when he caught them in the act of breaking into business premises in the Central Business District in Pinetown this morning. The police officer was slightly injured during the shoot-out with the suspects. ‘I wish the member a speedily recovery from hospital. The suspects are still at large but our police officers assisted by crime intelligence will work around the clock in tracing these suspects,’ he said.
