NELSPRUIT - A 25-year-old man is expected to appear in the Bushbuckridge Magistrate‘s Court today for allegedly raping his ex-girlfriend at Violetbank near Bushbuckridge on Saturday, 15 October 2022.

The victim alleges that on the said date around 17:30, she was on her way to her aunt’s place when she met her ex-boyfriend whom she has a protection order against. She then reportedly started running as she is scared of him. He allegedly chased her with a panga in his hand until he caught her. It is said that he dragged her to the nearby bushes where he repeatedly raped her the whole night. It is said that the suspect released her the following morning, 16 October 2022, around 04:30 am.

The victim managed to report the matter to the police. A case of rape was registered at Bushbuckridge Police Station then assigned to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). He was traced and arrested by the astute members. Police cannot rule out the possibilities of adding more charges against the suspect in relation to the violating of the Protection Order.

The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has condemned the incident and assured the public that police are working tirelessly to curb Gender-Based-Violence which is now regarded as a pandemic in the country. The General further called on men who engage in such behaviour to stop such barbaric behaviour against women.
