On Tuesday, 26 December 2023 in Lusikisiki CBD members of Public Order Policing (POP) arrested a 38-year-old man for discharging an illegal firearm in a public place.

As POP members were doing their intensive crime prevention operations in town, they received a complaint from one of the local business owners that there's someone shooting near her shop and they rushed to the scene. On arrival at the scene they spotted the man and was immediately arrested. .

The suspect was charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and unlawful discharging of a firearm in a public place.  He appeared at Lusikisiki Magistrates’ Court on 27 December 2023.

In a separate incident a 26-year-old man was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm during Operation Shanela in Sulenkama on 27 December 2023 at about 16:00. Police were busy conducting stop and searches, visited a local tavern and upon searching patrons one suspect was found with a firearm having no ammunition. As part of crime prevention strategy police also confiscated dangerous weapons.

Suspect has been detained at Sulenkama police station for possession of unlicensed firearm. He is appearing at Qumbu Magistrates’ Court today.

Major General Phumzile Cetyana, District Commissioner for OR TAMBO expressed his appreciation for good work being done by members on the ground to keep community members safe in the streets by eradicating all these dangerous weapons.
