Media Statement from Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS)
Pretoria – Brigadier Simon Mziyifani Madonsela (53) appeared briefly today (25March 2015) at the Durban Specialized Commercial Crimes Court Unit for alleged fraud and corruption. Madonsela was granted R5000.00 bail and his case was postponed to 09 April 2015 pending further investigations. In the meantime, Madonsela has been served with an intended notice of suspension and should furnish the Acting Head of the DPCI, Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza with representations within seven (7) days of receipt of the notice. Modensela was arrested today in his office, following allegations that he solicited a R28 000,00 bribe. It is alleged that the senior official was approached to assist in a case of a person who went missing in 2008. He allegedly demanded a R40 000 bribe, which would be used to assist his ailing wife at the time. A counter-offer of R28 000,00 was suggested to the suspect and the payments were made in 2010 and 2011.
The case of the missing person must still be resolved. The aggrieved family reported the matter at the Chatsworth Police Station in February this year (2015), which led to his arrest today.
