KWAZULU-NATAL – On 25 November 2022, the Durban Magistrates' Court sentenced Sage Khowa (38) to 15 years imprisonment for an armed robbery which happened at Amanzimtoti post office in January last year.

Khowa and his accomplices entered the Amanzimtoti post office and used an axe to smash the counter glass to gain access to the cash. They then took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.

Information was received that the suspects fled the scene in a black Nissan Navara towards Umbumbulu. A joint operation comprising of the K9 Unit, ET Rapid Response and Durban based Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation was swiftly conducted.

The accused’s vehicle was spotted in Umbumbulu area by ET Rapid Response members and they allegedly fired shots towards the security guards who returned fire, fatally wounding one accused. An undisclosed amount of cash and axe were recovered at the scene. Khowa was arrested and he appeared in court several times until he pleaded guilty last week.

He was further sentenced to five years imprisonment for two counts of attempted murder. His sentence will run concurrently.
