Media Statement NELSPRUIT - An elderly man (62) is expected to appear before the Barberton Magistrate's Court today, Thursday 08 December 2022 on allegations of unlawful possession of a R5 assault rifle and ammunition. According to information, a team of investigators successfully traced the suspect who was sought for pointing of firearm in Santigo farm, Barberton yesterday, Wednesday 07 December 2022. On the police's arrival at the farm, the suspect who reportedly had an R5 assault rifle hanging over his shoulder. The suspect was disarmed and two R5 live rounds were reportedly found in his possession as well as another one loaded in the magazine. The elderly man is said to have failed to produce the licence to possess the said weapon with ammunition hence he was arrested and charged for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. When appearing in court today, he is expected to face both charges of pointing of firearm as well as for unlawfully possession of firearm and ammunition. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela applauded members for their swift response which led to the arrest and the recovery of the lethal weapon with ammunition.
