POLOKWANE - The Tzaneen Regional Court handed down a life sentence to a 41-year-old male following his conviction for the attempted murder of his 39-year-old girlfriend.

According to court proceedings, the victim departed her residence at Segwashi, Nyakelang Section on 12 November 2023 at about 07:30 and travelled by minibus to work. Upon arrival at her workplace, she encountered the accused, Matome Modiba, who had been seated in a white Ford Ranger bakkie. The couple argued, during which Modiba produced a firearm. The victim attempted to board the bakkie, sat in the passenger seat, but Modiba pulled her from the vehicle, fired at her (injuring the hip and spinal region), and then drove away with her lying on the ground.

The Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responders were summoned, and the victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

An attempted murder docket was opened at Haenertsburg Police Station and assigned to Detective Sergeant Daniel Molepo of the Detectives Unit.

Through diligent investigative work, the suspect was arrested on the day of the incident at his residence in Mountain View, Ga-Molepo village. A firearm used in the crime and a white Ford Ranger with bloodstains on the passenger seat were recovered.

Detective Sergeant Molepo successfully opposed bail, and the accused remained in custody.

The court subsequently convicted Modiba and sentenced him to life imprisonment on 10 November 2025 at the Tzaneen Regional Court. The court also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm.

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commends the diligent investigation and the timely adjudication of this matter, emphasizing the commitment to removing perpetrators of domestic violence from our communities.
