PRETORIA - The SAPS will host its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to men and women in blue who died in the line of duty between 01 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. This year, the SAPS will remember 39 members who died during this period. The annual Commemoration Day will be held on Sunday, 01 September 2024. Today we pay tribute to Sergeant Lwando Bunga. Sergeant Bunga was attached to the East London Public Order Policing (POP) unit. He was fatally shot while responding to a business robbery in May 2023 where heavily armed suspects had attempted to rob a Fidelity warehouse. At the time of his death, he had 14 years’ service. He leaves behind five children, the youngest being 3 years of age. Sergeant Bunga’s name and thirty eight others will be engraved on the SAPS memorial wall at the Union Buildings on the 1st of September 2024, as a symbol of gratitude from the nation for the sacrifices he made in serving and protecting the people of this country until his last breath. To Sergeant Bunga, the SAPS flag does not fly because the wind blows it: it flies with the last breath of every police officer who died defending it. May your soul continue to rest in peace. Ends
