EASTERN CAPE - In honour of Mandela Day 2025 and under the theme “It’s still in your hands to combat poverty and inequity,” the Eastern Cape Provincial SAPS, in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services, Community Safety and other stakeholders, brought warmth and dignity to the elderly at Phumalanga Old Age Home in Alice (Dikeni), in the Amathole District. On Thursday, 24 July, SAPS members, with the assistance of DCS inmates, painted the home and cleaned the yard. Today, 25 July, a heartfelt programme unfolded. The event was led by the vibrant Warrant Officer N.E. Mathanzima and opened with praise, prayer, and a devotion delivered by Reverend M. Gqirhana. Mrs V. Nkomana of the Phumalanga Old Age Home welcomed guests and reflected on the home’s 21-year journey, highlighting the continued support from SAPS, the community, and other valued partners. Colonel L. Mndi from the EC Provincial SAPS Corporate Communication during her address emphasised the importance of giving back, especially by protecting and caring for the elderly. The Amathole Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Z. Freddie delivered a powerful message calling for stronger protection for the elderly amid rising cases of abuse and violence. “Mandela is a reminder that we must continue making a difference. When the elderly see SAPS members around and even at police stations, they shouldn’t be nervous but instead feel hopeful and secure”, he said. Lieutenant Colonel N. Hlope, the Women's Network Eastern Cape Champion, together with Lieutenant M.A. Magakoe from the EC SAPS Provincial Communications handed over scarves, socks, and beanies to keep the residents warm, as well as whistles to be used in times of fear or danger. A grateful Mr V. Rhenci, a beneficiary of the home, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the kind gesture and support received by the elders. The programme was closed by Alice Station Commander, Colonel D. Mandlelize, who thanked everyone involved and acknowledged the EC SAPS Provincial Head Office for choosing Amathole District for this outreach. “As SAPS, we must always ensure that we work within our guidelines while making a meaningful impact in our communities,” he added.
The event concluded with the serving of warm soup, bread, and scones, reminding all in attendance that Madiba’s legacy continues to live on through acts of service, compassion and unity.
