HEIDELBERG - The illicit drug trade in the rural town of Heidelberg was dealt a heavy blow when a 31-year-old man from Slangrivier was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for dealing in drugs.

Investigation reveals that police received a tip-off from the public earlier about a consignment of drugs destined for delivery in Slangrivier. The members strategically deployed themselves along the N2 highway where they stopped the vehicle. A search of the vehicle ensued and police found 104 mandrax tablets in possession of a passenger on board. The consignment was confiscated and the suspect arrested.

The accused, Michael Klaassen (31), was convicted on a charge of dealing in drugs following a lengthy trial. He was sentenced at the Heidelberg Magistrates’ court earlier this week.

Western Cape police management commended the investigation and prosecution teams for their efforts in ensuring a conviction in this regard. This sentence should send a stern warning to those who peddles illicit drugs into communities. They will face the full might of the law once arrested.
