NORTHERN CAPE - Devon Ovies (33) dubbed the "Gordonia Butcher" was sentenced to an additional 18 years imprisonment for the attempted murder of his sister and theft of motor vehicle on Friday, 03 February 2023 in the Springbok Regional Court. Devon was declared a state patient after he brutally murdered a colleague, Katrina Jagers (50) at the living quarters of the hospital in Upington during 2015. On 20 December 2021 he received leave from the mental institution in Kimberley and was booked out under the supervision of his 39-year-old sister who resides in Concordia in Springbok. On 06 January 2022 at 21:00 Devon and his sister had an altercation with regard to his house-arrest that led him to stab her 15 times in the presence of her two toddlers. He fled in her vehicle from her house in Concordia but was arrested 30 minutes later in Okiep. Devon Ovies was sentenced to 14 years for attempted murder and 4 years for theft of motor vehicle. The sentences will run concurrently. The Provincial Commissioner for the Northern Cape, Lt Gen Koliswa Otola applauded D/Sgt Lulu Fortuin from Nababeep Detectives for her hard work and relentless efforts which in the "Gordonia Butcher" being put behind bars where he belongs as a perpetrator of Gender Based Violence and Femicide.
