ELIOTDALE - A vigilant police official nabbed a 31 year old suspect for possession of unlicensed firearm last night at Elliotdale CBD.

According to the information, at about 19h40, the police official was walking in town when he spotted a male carrying a firearm next to a spaza shop. He immediately asked for back-up from the Police Station, and on their arrival, they approached the suspect. Upon searching him, they recovered an unlicensed firearm.

He was immediately arrested and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The firearm will be taken for ballistic tests, and investigation is underway.

He is due to appear at Elliotdale Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 18 October 2024.

The Amathole District Commissioner Major General Ngangema Xakavu appreciated the vigilance of the off duty police official in ensuring that at least one firearm is off the street and saved the lives of our citizens. "We will ensure that our citizens are safe and secure and firearms are recovered and confiscated by Police," he added
