Post Office pay clerk arrested for fraud

EASTERN CAPE – The Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks arrested Gugulethu Chumani Luthi (29) on 2 March 2023 for charges of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant fraud.

It is alleged that Luthi who was employed on contract, as Pay Clerk at Qumbu Post Office fraudulently and unlawfully changed seven SASSA social grant beneficiaries’ account details on the system and issued new cards and pin codes without the knowledge of the beneficiaries. It is further reported that he then withdrew all the cash from those accounts for his personal benefit. The total prejudice value suffered by the social grant beneficiaries is R8500.

The criminal case of fraud was registered and referred to the Hawks for investigation which resulted to Luthi’s arrest on 2 March 2023. Luthi appeared in Qumbu Magistrates’ court and he was released on warning. He will be back in court on 28 March 2023 for trial.
