Six suspects will be appearing in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court today for two counts of attempted murder, robbery and unlicensed firearms. On Tuesday, 24 September 2013 the SAPS Special Task Team, KZN Tracking Team and KwaDukuza Task Team members received information about wanted suspects who committed business robbery and shot two police officers in KwaMaphumulo area on Monday, 23 September 2013. They proceeded to Umlazi where they found and arrested six suspects aged 30 and 45 in possession of jewellery, eight cell phones, three vehicles, two pistol one belonging to the police officer and an AK 47. The recovered cell phones were allegedly taken during a house robbery and one of the recovered vehicles was also used in the robbery. The firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if there were used in any crime in the country. The members will continue to establish if the arrested suspects are linked to any other cases in the province.

 

On 23 September 2013 at approximately 17:00, at Maphumulo area, Jim store ship-owner was inside the store when he was confronted by the suspects at gunpoint and demanded money and cell phones before fleeing in their gateway vehicle. The suspects noticed a police vehicle in the vicinity and fired shots at the members, wounding one on his legs and the other on his arm, head and legs. The state vehicle was also damaged and members were taken to hospital for medical attention. The members gave chase to the suspects' vehicle as the suspected fired shots to the police and members reiterated and the vehicle came to a standstill. The suspects abandoned their vehicle and proceeded to the market area where they robbed an off duty police official of his service pistol at Glendale area, near KwaDukuza.

 

The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni was delighted with the arrest of the alleged robbers. We will not allow the senseless shooting of our members to deter us from our mandate to fight crime," she said.
