Mother and son in court for lending firearm to a drug dealer as payment for drugs

MPUMALANGA – A mother (67) and her son (35) were arrested on Wednesday,15 March 2023 for contravening the provisions of the Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000. They were nabbed in Secunda during an intelligence driven disruptive operation conducted by Secunda based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team together with Secunda Crime Intelligence.

This followed an intensive investigation conducted about a firearm which was confiscated during the arrest of an alleged drug dealer on 09 March 2023. The Hawks investigation revealed that the firearm belongs to this family. A further probe also revealed that the duo allegedly released the firearm and six rounds of live ammunition to the dealer after the son owed R1 500.00 for drugs and later offered it as a payment.

The pair was arrested and charged, they will appear in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 16 March 2023.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Gerber appeals to members of the community in Mpumalanga to provide information about drug dealing and illegal possession firearms in the province.
