Amathole District operations yield success

AMATHOLE DISTRICT - Over the past weekend, police in the Amathole District embarked in Operation Sikhona duties in various zones within the district. The operations yielded good results as at least three unlicensed firearms were recovered.

Police were squeezing the space of criminals by conducting foot patrols as well as stop and searches in the areas and they managed to arrest more than 30 suspects aged between 20 and 49 for crimes ranging from house robbery, common robbery, theft, possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, dealing in liquor without license, common assault and theft. Dangerous weapons and drugs (mandrax, Tik and dagga) were confiscated during patrols as part of crime prevention. During the operation, police recovered at least three unlicensed firearms and 35 rounds of ammunition.

These suspects will appear in different magistrate’s courts tomorrow, 20 March 2023.   

The Amathole District Commissioner, Major General Ngangema Xakavu thanked the members for their dedication in ensuring that our citizens are safe and secure. ‘We will continue with these operations to ensure the safety of our citizens,’ he added.
