Media Centre 20 August 2014 The South African Police Service welcomes the attempted rape sentencing that was handed down to a 62 year old man on 18 August 2014. Joseph Molefe alias "Oom Mike" was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, of which 3 years are suspended for 5 years, for the attempted rape of a 9 year old girl from Boichoko in Postmasburg. On 25 January 2014, the accused lured three 9-year-old girls to his house under the pretence of giving them sweets. "Oom Mike", as he was known to the girls grabbed one of the girls and tied her hands and feet. The other two girls escaped and alerted a cousin of the victim. The cousin found the accused half naked over the victim. The victim's hands and feet were still tied. The suspect was immediately arrested by the police and he was taken into custody for rape. The charge was later changed to attempted rape. The accused was denied bail and were remanded behind bars up until he was sentenced in the Postmasburg Regional Court on 18 August 2014. "The Postmasburg Cluster Commander, Lt Col Dries Witbooi commended Detective Warrant Officer Anna De Bruin for her excellent investigative work and commitment who ensured that the perpetrator was brought to justice. The community was also thanked for their quick reaction in responding to the alert by the children. The SAPS hopes that the sentencing will serve as a deterrent to others who consider committing similar crimes against women and children.
