Five suspects to make court appearance for robberies

Five suspects will make their second court appearance on Tuesday, 3 May 2016 at the Mthunzini Magistrates. The suspects, Philani Mbatha (25), Ben Sibiya (40), Jabulani Mbatha (31), Lindani Mabaso (32) and Sboniso Mkhwanazi (29) were arrested and charged for three counts of business robberies and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. These men who were terrorising University of Zululand students in the Mthunzini area, were arrested last week Friday after a sting operation by Mthunzini Detectives. During their arrest, Police recovered .38 revolver with ammunition as well as a Toyota Corolla suspected to be used during the commission of these crimes.

It is alleged that during their crime spree, these men terrorised the community as well as business people in the area whilst robbing them at gunpoint. They also entered residential premises and attacked students who lived in the area taking their belongings in the process. Detectives from Mtunzini police station noticed an increased in such cases during this month with a similar modus operandi and worked around the clock to ensure that the suspects are caught. These men will be linked to other cases that were reported in and around the Mthunzini area.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Mthunzini Detectives for rounding up the gang and putting them behind the bars. “It is important that these thugs remain behind bars so that they can do no more harm to the community. We appeal to members of the community who may have been held up by these men to come forward and open cases against them as it will assist us to strengthen the case against them,” she said.
