GQEBERHA - Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso commended the police officers involved in the arrest of one of the suspects, who allegedly robbed a liquor store yesterday, 27 October 2025, in Despatch.

The mayhem unfolded at about 16:45, when an armed response vehicle responded to a panic alarm of a business robbery in progress at the liquor store on the main street. As the vehicle arrived, it was confronted by a hail of bullets from the suspects, who were fleeing the store with liquor and cash in a white Corsa bakkie.

The suspects drove for a short distance, and on seeing a police patrol van on the road, they alighted the bakkie and split up and opened fire, as they were running in different directions.  In return, police returned fire.  Three of the suspects ended up in a white Toyota Quantum.

The suspects in a Quantum upon reaching Khayamnandi (Despatch), they opened fire on the members, and alighted the Quantum. In response, the police returned fire. The suspects continued their escape on foot to the nearby bushes.

Police managed to find one suspect in the nearby bushes, with a gunshot wound. Police also found a firearm and cash in his possession.

Police also found liquor and cash from an abandoned Corsa bakkie.  The second firearm was also recovered not far from the liquor store.
