Media Statement from North West Media Centre Potchefstroom - The police in the province apprehended 22 suspects for different crimes in Rustenburg and Mahikeng between Thursday, 10 and Friday, 11 December 2015 as part of ensuring the safety of communities during this period. The operations were conducted under Operation Fiela, and the arrested suspects include 12 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, five for assault common, one for common robbery, three for malicious damage to property and one for burglary. The participation of other role players such as the Department of Agriculture in the operation held in Mahikeng paid off when 11 fines were issued for contravention of Fertilizers, Farm Feeds Agricultural Remedies Act, 1947 (Act No. 36 of 1947) after suspects were found in possession and selling of unregistered agricultural products, mainly fertilizers. Two motorists were also issued with fines for contravention of the Road Traffic Act. The operation also led to searching of 81 premises, 121 vehicles and 396 persons. The suspects are due to appear in the Magistrates' Courts in Rustenburg and Mmabatho on Monday, 14 December 2015.
