Media Statement WESTERN CAPE - Endeavours by police to curb the damage to essential infrastructure and activities which negatively impacts on the economy of this region yielded excellent results when Riversdale police arrested two suspects after copper was found in their possession. On Saturday, 17 June 2023 at about 12:45 police members conducted vehicle patrols when they spotted a man and woman with a parcel in the central business district of Riversdale. The members approached the pair and found a bag with copper in their possession. Both were arrested for the possession of stolen property. The suspects aged 28 and 45 remain in police custody until they are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 19 June 2023. In an unrelated incident, on 14 June 2023, Langeberg K9 Unit members confiscated 240 kilogram of copper cables found along a gravel road at Vleesbaai just outside Mossel Bay. The members also seized a Nissan bakkie, believed to be used to transport the cable, in the vicinity. The origin of the find is under investigation and those involved are yet to be brought to book. Furthermore, later the same day, Da Gamaskop police arrested two suspects, aged 33 and 45, after copper and aluminium with an estimated street value of R3000 were found in their possession. They are facing a charge of possession of suspected stolen property each. All these arrests were conducted during the execution of high density operations aimed at reducing and combatting crime. The focus on essential infrastructure is one of the key priorities when conducting these operations.
