EASTERN CAPE - An off duty police Sergeant from Public Order Policing obliviously walked into a robbery in progress at a business in East London and his reaction resulted in the arrest of two suspects yesterday afternoon, 21 June 2023.

It is reported that at about 15:30, the complainant (41) alleged that he was in his shop in Terminus Street in East London when two males entered and pointed a firearm at him. His assistant ran away. The suspects demanded for cellphones while at the same time helped themselves to five cellphones.

As they were exiting the shop, the police officer walked in. The suspects pointed the firearm at him and after warning them to surrender, fell on deaf ears, the official fired two shots hitting them in the upper body.

The stolen cellphones were found in their possession. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

A case of business robbery is under investigation. The 26-year-old suspect was also found in possession of about 10 mandrax tablets and loose dagga. He was also charged for possession of drugs.

The suspects, aged 26 and 32, are expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court soon.
