Media Statement MPUMALANGA – 37-year-old man was sentenced on 23 June 2023 by Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 4435 counts of contravening the provisions of Counterfeit Goods Act, Act 37 of 1997 and Trademark Act, Act 194 of 1993. He was sentenced to R200 000-00 fine or two years’ imprisonment of which R100 000-00 or one year imprisonment is suspended for five years on condition that the accused not been convicted on Contravention of the provision of Counterfeit Goods Act offences again in the period of suspension. Kawomba's sentencing come from an incident that occurred on the 11th of November 2022 near Lebombo Port of Entry Komatipoort where the accused was found unlawfully possessing, in control of or transportating counterfeit branded clothing being sneakers, sandals & jeans with estimated street value of R2 224 318.99 from Mozambique into South Africa. The accused was a driver for the Mbombela Company called Cruise Cargo. Ends
