Police recover stolen cellphones and unlicensed firearms

GAUTENG - In an effort to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, the police through intelligence driven operations have recovered four unlicensed firearms in two different incidents.

On the night of 01 August 2023, the detectives in Hillbrow followed up on information about a man in possession of unlicensed firearms. The suspect was positively identified and upon searching him, three firearms with filled off serial numbers and 10 cellphones with courier invoices were found in his possession.

Preliminary investigation linked the suspect to a business robbery that had happened earlier on the same day at Evaton Mall whereby cellphones were stolen. The suspect has two pending cases against him of business robbery and possession of stolen property reported at Vanderbijlpark and Johannesburg Central police stations respectively.

On another incident, the police in Tembisa arrested a 39-year-old man after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Vusimusi hostel in Tembisa.

Both suspects are expected to appear before Magistrate courts in due course.

The public is urged to continue working together with the police to fight against crime by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or leave anonymous tip-offs on MySAPS App.
