Media Statement GAUTENG - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has recovered 511 unlicensed firearms and 7,736 rounds of ammunition between 01 January 2026 and 31 March 2026. This forms part of ongoing efforts to fight crime and improve safety across the province. The recovered firearms include automatic rifles, revolvers, pistols, rifles, and shotguns. In some cases, serial numbers were removed to hide the origin of the firearms and avoid detection by police. This positive result is also linked to Operation Shanela 2, which was conducted simultaneously across all five districts in Gauteng. These operations started in the early hours of Thursdays and were also carried out on Saturdays. The operations included high-density patrols, stop-and-search activities, crime prevention initiatives, and intelligence-driven actions conducted throughout the week and over weekends. SAPS in Gauteng remains committed to strengthening operations to remove illegal firearms from communities and to ensure the safety and security of all residents. Ends
