POTCEFSTROOM - The Illicit Mining Task Team, supported by various units, including the National Intervention Unit (NIU), K9, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Public Order Policing (POP) as well as the Department of Home Affairs and mine security, arrested 24 suspected undocumented persons during an operation held in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District on Tuesday, 15 August 2023. During the arrest, one of the suspects was found to be illegally in possession of ammunition.

The suspects were arrested after the team followed up on information at an old mine in Stilfontein. All 24 suspects, believed to be Lesotho citizens, were processed by the Department of Home Affairs. They appeared before the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 17 August 2023, for being illegally in the country. All the suspects will be deported soon.

In a second high density operation conducted by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, K9, Mounted Unit, TRT, Flying Squad, POP and Visible Policing on Wednesday, 16 August 2023, three identified buildings in Potchefstroom Wandellaan (in the CBD) were searched, leading to the arrest of 58 suspected undocumented persons, mostly Malawians. They were also processed by the Department of Home Affairs and appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court today.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena congratulated the various teams for their continuous efforts and collaboration in ensuring that undocumented persons are brought to book as part of re-asserting the authority of the state.
