On Thursday, 15 May 2014 the Esikhawini Regional Court sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment for two counts of rape. During February 2010, at Gobandlovu Reserve, Esikhawini the victim (13) was sleeping in her room when her stepfather overpowered and raped her.

He threatened to kill and chase her out of his home if she reported the matter to her mother who was out to sell avocados on that day. During March 2013, the accused raped the victim again and assaulted her and her siblings. Her mother noticed that the victim was pregnant and when she questioned her, she told her mum what has been happening. The matter was reported at Esikhawini SAPS and two charges of rape were opened for investigation. The docket was handed over to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. After an exhaustive investigation by the Unit, the accused was arrested and charged for two case of rape. He made several court appearances until he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended members of the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for their exemplary investigation which resulted in the conviction.

"The collective efforts of the SAPS, NPA and Department of Justice have restored the communities' faith that such monsters will not get away with their evil deeds. We hope that this sentence will deter others who have intentions to take advantage of our young and innocent children," she said.
