PRETORIA - Today, Tuesday, 3 June 2014, the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) in Pretoria arrested a former deputy national commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Mr Hamilton Hlela, for four counts of corruption.

Fifty-seven-year-old Mr Hlela, who retired from the SAPS in 2010, was responsible for the Supply Chain Management Division at the SAPS's national Head Office in Pretoria and is being accused of accepting over R52 000,00 in kickbacks from a service provider of the SAPS during his term of office.

From 2008 to 2009, the money was allegedly paid for family leisure trips, university and school fees.

He appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court today and the case was postponed to 27 June 2014 for the disclosure of the docket. Hlela was released on warning.
