Media Statement WESTERN CAPE - The law has taken its course, resulting in a sentence of 23 years imprisonment for Charles Williams for kidnapping, murder and defeating ends of justice. Initial reports reveal that on 10 July 2024 at approximately 20:45, the victim, Charlene Overmeyer, aged 57 at the time was kidnapped from her home in St Montaque Village in Lavender, Steenberg . The victim was watching TV together with her family when suddenly the electricity went off and unknown men entered the house with a flashlight and dragged the victim out of the house at gunpoint. The suspects' faces were covered to hide their identity and they fled the scene with the victim in a silver vehicle. The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation, Anti Kidnapping Task Team was activated for the investigation of this matter and 40 days later the body of the victim was discovered in a shallow grave in Xakabuntu, Vrygrond, Muizenberg. Three suspects namely, Farried Williams, 23-years-old, Charles Williams, 51-years-old, and Jason Arendse, 31-years-old were later arrested and positively linked to the kidnapping, murder of the victim and for defeating the ends of justice. The suspects were charged and brought before the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on several occasions and their bail was successfully opposed. The matter was then escalated to the Khayelitsha Priority court. On Tuesday 22 July 2025 at the Khayalitsha Priority Court, the charges were withdrawn against accused number 1 and accused number 3. Accused number 2, Charles Williams was found guilty on all charges. He was then sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder, 5 years for kidnapping and 3 years for defeating the ends of justice.
