WESTERN CAPE - As part of Mandela Day activities, the South African Police Service in the Western Cape, together with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China, extended a helping hand to vulnerable children and community organisations in Khayelitsha on Friday, 17 July 2026. Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection, Major General Bongani Maqhashalala, and the Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, Ms Wang Xiao, handed over blankets and jackets to the Baphumelele Children’s Home, which provides care and support to 120 children who have been affected by abuse and domestic violence. Representatives from Angel Community Outreach in Valhalla Park and St Ann’s Shelter in Mitchells Plain also attended the event and benefited from the donation drive. Each organisation received 50 blankets and 40 jackets to assist those in their care during the winter season. The initiative forms part of the Mandela Day spirit of service and compassion, demonstrating how partnerships between communities, organisations and stakeholders can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most in need.
