South African Police Service

Twenty one (21) life sentences were handed down to three notorious criminal gangs, Vukani Ngcobo, Bonginkosi Fundakwezakhe Sibisi and Qaphelani Dlamandlakhe Chiyi, who killed  three police officers during their crime spree in 2012. They were further sentenced to more than 200 years imprisonment for crimes including attempted murder, robbery with agravating circumstances and possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition. During sentencing today at the Johannesburg High Court, the Judge commended police for overwhelming evidence collected and presented at the trial after they were convicted of 26 charges.

The sentencing of the notorious gang is a major boost to crime prevention activities and a relief to the families of the victims of crime.  Their crime spree started in 2012 at Meadowlands where two men were fatally shot at a tarvern. Few months later they killed three police officers and wounded a fourth officer near Wanderers Taxi Rank. All police officers were robbbed of their firearms. During the same year in November, they shot and killed four people during an armed robbery.

The Provincial Investigating team worked tirelessly to ensure that the notorious gang was brought to justice and the law has taken its course.
