VIRGINIA - Three suspects appeared in Virginia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 31 October 2023, for possession of suspected stolen livestock after they were arrested on Saturday, 28 October 2023 at about 13:45.

SAPS Virginia Rural Safety Coordinator member received information about three males busy slaughtering cows at one of the farms in Virginia. A way lay was conducted by Virginia Rural Safety Coordinators and Odendaalsrus Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit members. The suspects were spotted at the river bank busy slaughtering a cow. Members swiftly reacted and managed to arrest two suspects while the third suspect managed to evade arrest.

Virginia Visible Policing members arrived at the scene and with the help of community members, the third suspect was spotted near Goosen farm where he was arrested. Members recovered the slaughtered remains of a cow, three cattle including a calf, two heads of cattle, knives, pangas and homemade spears.

The owner of livestock from the farm in the district of Welkom arrived at the scene and positively identified the cattle as seven were stolen from his farm.

The three arrested suspects, Nkosinathi Mdingi (46), Teboho Mphafi (46) and Tshehlakhati Lekhanya (32) appeared in court and the case was postponed until 06 November 2023 for bail application. An additional charge of Stock Theft will be added against the three arrested suspects.
