Media Statement EXCELSIOR – A 60-year-old uncle was sentenced for rape of a 10-year-old girl after he mistakenly sent the video of him with the child to the child's uncle. On 17 April 2021, it is alleged that the uncle was at home when he received a message from a family member together with music videos. The uncle opened it and upon closer inspection, he realised that one of the people in the child pornography video was his sister's 10-year-old little girl. The uncle immediately took it upon himself and reported the matter to Excelsior police. The video showed the victim being recorded by the suspect who is a family member aged 56 at the time, while she was performing sexual deeds under the instruction of the suspect. The case was forwarded to Captain Bez Bezuidenhout of Provincial Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation (PSECI) under the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) who traced and arrested the suspect and he has been in custody ever since. The videos were downloaded from the suspect's handset and Colonel Monosi from SAPS Free State Forensic Social Workers unit compiled a sounding forensic report that ultimately secured the harsh sentencing meted out against the accused. The now 60-year-old suspect was sentenced by Excelsior Regional Court to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for rape and his name was also entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders. Ends
